Job Summary

As a member of central processing, the primary goal is to prevent the spread of microorganisms that can cause disease by ensuring that all medical devices and instruments used in procedures are properly cleaned, disinfected, and sterilized. Take inventory and order equipment/items as needed, as well as assemble procedural case carts (which contain both supplies and instrumentation) for both surgical and obstetrical patients. Perform these duties striving for 100% accuracy to avoid a negative outcome for our patients.
Decontaminate instrumentation and equipment, assemble surgical trays and instrument packages, and sterilize instruments, equipment, using EO gas, steam sterilization and hydrogen peroxide methods.
Assemble case carts for surgery and OB. Restock supplies. Assist with inventory. Credit patient charges.

• Perform acute inspection of each item received in Central Processing, particularly in decontamination after an item has been used. Once inspected, the central processing tech will use critical thinking skills to select the correct method of decontamination for each item (instruments, scopes, containers, and case carts etc.) according to best practice standards and manufacturer’s instructions for use. • Assemble, package, and sterilize instruments, trays, and supplies according to best practice standards as well as manufacturer’s instructions for use. Examples of this includes: EtO gas sterilization, high pressure steam sterilization, and diffusing hydrogen peroxide vapor. • Conduct first sterilization load of the day and implant load biological testing; with ongoing sterilization load monitoring. • Exhibit excellent customer service qualities in several aspects including: answering the phones and filling requests from the operating rooms, OB and all other departments and/or sites needing supplies and/or instruments. • Assemble procedure case carts for the operating room and obstetrical patient. • Ensure supplies and equipment are transported to appropriate department(s) including: OR, OB and specialty units according to infection prevention measures following appropriate traffic patterns (i.e. non-critical, semi-critical, and critical areas). • Maintain a clean and safe environment in all areas of care including: decontamination area, tray room area, and sterile storage area. • Demonstrate appropriate use of computerized systems: EPIC, McKesson Material Management, and OneSource. • Manage the crediting system for items used or not-used on the patient and return credited items to the shelves in sterile storage in addition to crediting the patient’s account. • Perform other duties as assigned. • Committed to the continuous improvement of the patient experience which includes patient safety, quality of care and excellent service.
