    Summary

    The position located in Virgin Islands National Park, in the Park Headquarters Division.

    This area has a COLA and Locality Pay Rate of 12.62% (COLA) and (Locality) 15.95%.


    Responsibilities

    The incumbent serves as Museum Curator for Virgin Islands National Park. Provides overall professional and technical direction for the museum collection program, plans for and develops recommendations for programming priorities of all museum management functions, and ensures that NPS and professionally recognized procedures are applied in all operations. The collections cover a combination of disciplines, the majority of which are historic and prehistoric archeological materials along with some geology, biology, botany, history collections and archives. Duties include, but are not limited to:

    • Collections. Maintains all record keeping and documentation for museum collections; maintains automated collections management data using NPS-wide systems and according to NPS museum standards; develops reports; provides interpretive and reference services; maintains proper preservation, security and fire protection, and collection storage conditions; monitors, controls and maintains the environment for collections; and manages an integrated pest management program.
    • Exhibits. Plans and implements proper curatorial procedures for on-site and outside exhibits, including implementation of loan paperwork; implements procedures to preserve and protect objects while on exhibit.
    • Research. Conducts research necessary to identify and/or authenticate museum objects, to obtain necessary catalog data, to develop new techniques for collection preservation, and to determine legal status (e.g. copyright); assists researchers (both park staff and public) with collection inquiries and determines appropriateness of information release.
    • Education. Assists in the general visitor services program of the unit when called upon; develops interpretive and educational programs using the museum collections. Work with partner group/other park divisions on Artist in Residence and other art and collection based outreach projects.

    • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
    • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
    • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to five (5) nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
    • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

    Qualifications

    All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-05/26/2020-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

    Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect either full-time or 40 hours per week. If a part-time work schedule is reflected, the hours must be annotated to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience.

    To qualify for this position you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

    Degree: successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in museum studies, archaeology, anthropology, history, or similar area of cultural resources management.

    -OR-

    Combination of education and experience - courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.-OR-Four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study as shown above.

    In addition to the above, applicants must also possess the following:

    SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of specialized experience include: applying the principles of museum management, and using technical expertise in their application; assisting with the management of long-term museum collection storage, and providing and/or assisting with access to, research of these collections; documenting museum collections with special emphasis on architectural, archeological, archival, and history collections.

    EDUCATION: Successful completion of 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree with fields of study such as museum studies, art, history, archeology, scientific subjects, or other courses related to this position. You must include transcripts.

    Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above that meets 100% of the requirements for this position.

    Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated.

    Education

    To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

    If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

    Physical Demands: The work requires mental alertness, better than average manual dexterity, and mobility. Although primarily sedentary, inspections and operations evaluations involve activities demanding a certain amount of exertion such as walking, climbing, crawling, lifting of heavy objects, bending, stooping, and reaching. Working with collections can involve prolonged exposure to hazardous materials and equipment. Working with lighting systems, environmental control systems, and alarm systems can involve exposure to electrical current and the use of power tools with physical hazards. The work entails the ability to concentrate for long periods of time.

    Working Conditions: Most of the work is performed in an office and storage or laboratory facility. Frequent visits are made to the library, visitor center, and other museums in the park. The incumbent makes occasional field trips to the backcountry. Some travel to other facilities and museums, as well as to training and professional meetings is required.
