Senior Nursery Nurse - Mother and Baby Unit

The Kingfisher Mother and Baby Unit (MBU) is an 8 bedded Regional Mental Health ward based at Hellesdon Hospital, Norwich. The Kingfisher MBU admits mothers together with their babies, preventing separation, while the mother receives inpatient mental health treatment.

One in five women experience post or antenatal depression, anxiety or in some cases psychosis during pregnancy or in the first year after childbirth.

We provide specialist care for women and their babies with moderate to severe mental illness such as bipolar disorder, severe depression or psychosis during the late stages of pregnancy or in the first 12 months after birth. By providing specialist therapeutic care and opportunities parents are able to build a secure bond with their babies while also receiving treatment for their mental health.

The role of the Lead Nursery Nurse within the team is to provide clinical leadership and expertise to ensure parents have the opportunity to positively interact and connect with their babies whilst receiving treatment. These opportunities will empower parents to support and understand the development of their baby and meet their holistic needs. The Lead Nursey Nurse will demonstrate and role model a sound knowledge of caring effectively for infants under 1 year and use this to teach and guide colleagues. Ensuring current practice and care on the Mother & Baby Unit reflects standards as outlined in the Trust’s Safeguarding and Promoting the Welfare of Children Policy alongside the Norfolk County Council Child Protection Procedures and to be able to involve specialist safeguarding services as and when necessary. Supporting junior staff in, and be able to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for infants on the Mother & Baby unit.

As the Lead Nursery Nurse you will fulfil the role of line manager to all nursery nurses within the team. promoting a flexible approach to working with mothers and their babies. As part of the line manager role you will monitor quality of care delivered, performance and contribute to individual and service development. Contributing to the development of standards of care for both mothers and babies on the unit, proving feedback as necessary and taking positive steps toward implementing necessary change. You will be asked to contribute and deliver training in line with service need and development of the staff group

A good understanding of infant development and care will be essential to this role and experience or interest in working in adult mental health. Previous experience in people management and service delivery will aide you to fulfil the duties required

You will be part an essential part of the multidisciplinary team providing an overview of the high level of care offered to both the mothers and their babies. The role requires multi-agency working, liaising with involved professions to ensure all spheres of care are met. For example; health visitors, midwives, childrens services, GP. Therefore, good interpersonal, communication and organisational skills are required.

This post does require full PMA fitness (full training will be given).
The role is expected to be Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm. However, it may at times be appropriate to offer flexibility during evening/ weekends.
